Every Wi-Fi user must know how to adopt security measures that will prevent them from becoming victims of wireless technology crimes.

Considered as one of the greatest advancement since the Internet, Wi-Fi wireless networking technology has given mobility to computers. People use wireless technology in the office, at home, and in public places. Unless Wi-Fi users adopt some sort of security, various problems can result when computers transmit unsecured information to one another. Bandwidth theft, exposed e-mail messages, password or user name theft, and hijacked online identity rank among the top problems brought about by unsecured Wi-Fi transmissions. Every Wi-Fi user must know how to secure their computer.

Install Wireless Equivalent Privacy (WEP)

Router configuration tools often present WEP as the first choice in wireless security. WEP authenticates anyone who wants to access the wireless network, and encrypts all traffic. WEP is not perfect ( University of Maryland computer science professor William A. Arbaugh provides evidence at "802.11 d Security Vulnerabilities") and can be defeated with advanced software, but it can prevent unauthorized “front door” entry. Wi-Fi hardware manuals normally include instructions on how to set-up WEP.

WEP security comes in two versions, the stronger and newer 128-bit version, and the older and weaker 40-bit version. The 128-bit WEP cipher will provide more advance security, but not all wireless devices on the network might support it. Users need to check if all the wireless devices in the system will support 128-bit WEP before installing 128-bit WEP.

Choose A Strong WEP Password

A weak password can easily compromise WEP security. A prudent Wi-Fi user will devote even a little time to create a good strong password and gain some peace of mind. According to Microsoft's Online Safety page (http://www.microsoft.com/protect/fraud/passwords/create.aspx), users must avoid using dictionary words in any language, sequences or repeated characters, and personal information (birthdays, anniversaries, drivers license numbers, etc.). Using long passwords with combinations of upper and lower case letters along with numbers and other characters will also create strong passwords.

Install Firewall on Each Computer

Firewall software helps screen out hackers, viruses, and worms that try to reach a computer over the Internet; it acts as another layer of defense against security threats. Firewall allows access only to specific recognized machines on a network. To access firewall settings, users can go to Windows Control Panel and click on Firewall.

Use Virtual Private Network (VPN)

Basically, VPNs form a private network that uses a public network (usually the Internet) to connect remote sites or users together. VPNs use authenticated links to make sure that only authorized users can connect to a network . It also uses encryption to make sure that others can't intercept and can't use data that travels over the Internet. Numerous websites offer both free and paid versions of VPN.

Turn Off Remote Administrator

WLAN (wireless local area network) routers typically come with the ability for a network administrator to remotely configure the router. Microsoft has, by default turned this feature off and it should not be enabled unless absolutely necessary. Leaving the feature enabled could leave the network vulnerable as well.

Advances in technology has brought the convenience of Wi-Fi wireless networking, but some security measures must be taken in order to fully enjoy its features. Securing Wi-Fi transmissions must be done to continue reaping the wonderful benefits of Wi-Fi.
